There has been a 34% increase in the number of people registered at national employment centres.
Data for May shows there were 103,763 more jobless this year than existed at the same time last year.
The total rose by 16,611 from April. In all, there are 544,351 people actively looking for jobs in Portugal, whether on the continental landmass, or the autonomous regions of Azores and Madeira.
