A 31-year-old prison inmate with what has been described as a psychiatric illness has ‘gone AWOL’ from Caxias prison today, apparently while out with a team on gardening duty in Oeiras, near Lisbon. Say reports, the young man was in jail for theft. “Communication has been made to police authorities. Efforts are being made to recapture this patient quickly ”, said a statement by the prison service. It has since transpired that this man is ‘seriously perturbed’ and appears to be carrying a gun. Shots have apparently been fired, but for the moment the young man appears to be ‘still at large’, having lost at least one of his shoes…
