3.9 earthquake registered in Algarve

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was registered in the Algarve in the early hours of this morning (September 5).

According to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA), the quake was registered at 1.49am, with its epicentre being located 98 kilometres to the south/southwest of Faro.

The earthquake was felt with maximum intensity III (Modified Mercalli intensity scale) in Albufeira, IPMA adds.

The institute explains that an earthquake felt with III intensity is “felt inside homes”, can rock objects and can create a vibration that is similar to the “passing of a truck.”
