An earthquake measuring 3.4 magnitude on the Richter scale shook the Algarve this morning, with an epicenter in Silves.
The quake startled hundreds of people as they began the day – and was described by some who felt it as “like being on top of a gigantic underground wave” – but at time of writing no damage had been reported.
The quake appears to have been felt from Lagos to as far as Albufeira, according to comments on the Facebook page of local weather website Meteofontes.
IPMA, Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute has confirmed that the epicenter was in Silves at 9.39am.
A survey has since been posted on IPMA’s website to help collect more data (click here)
