2,700 kilos of sardines have been ‘seized’ from a fishing boat in Portimão due to ‘over fishing’. The boat was found to have exceeded its admissible quota during a police check at the docks this week. The owner of the boat has been slapped with an offence notice (and a fine), while the fish may have been distributed to social institutions (this is generally what happens in these situations). Explain reports, the GNR reminds people that “maritime resources should be exploited in a way that guarantees long-term environmental, economic and social sustainability”. Quotas are “defined by scientific data available”, seeking to assure fishermen’s incomes at the same time.
