A total of 26 Portuguese men and women have successfully concluded sex-change operations since 2011. The procedures – all carried out at Coimbra University Hospitals and paid for by the Portuguese state – have cost over a million euros. Each protocol has cost the State between €40,000 and €50,000, Celso Cruzeiro, former director of URGUS (the genitourinary and sexual reconstruction unit) has revealed. Right now, 125 more Portuguese are waiting for state-funded sex change operations.
