Around 250,000 Portuguese people are addicted to anxiolytics or other sleep aid medication and four out of 10 have taken these medicines at least once in their lifetime, according to a survey by consumer rights association DECO.
In order to conduct the study, the organisation surveyed more than 12,500 people, gathering a representative sample of the adult Portuguese population.
