As the Algarve Resident hit the newsstands this morning (Thursday, August 29) with a front cover story reporting on the deaths of four firefighters in August, news emerged that another firefighter, a 21-year-old woman from Carregal do Sal, had been killed while combating a blaze in Serra do Caramulo (Tondela), an area that has been ravaged by several fires since last week.
The young woman is the fifth firefighter to be killed in Portugal in just one month while tackling a ferocious blaze.
Two other firefighters suffered burn injuries in the same fire and one is said to be in a serious condition in hospital.
