Finance minister Fernando Medina
Finance minister Fernando Medina's focus on reducing Portugal's deficit has meant that ministries beset by strikes/ unhappy public sector workers bemoan what has been described as "the financial corset" which stops them giving in to demands, or even meeting them half way.

2024 State Budget approved by extraordinary Council of Ministers

Portugal’s Socialist government’s State Budget for 2024 was approved in an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers yesterday. The document will be presented to parliament on Tuesday; is due to be voted on in its generality on October 30-31 and finally voted on ‘globally’ on November 29. The absolute majority government will have no trouble getting this budget approved, as even if all the other parties vote against, PS Socialists will still ‘carry the day’.
