Data just released by ERS (the health regulatory body in Portugal) points to a 15% increase in the number of women undergoing voluntary terminations in 2022 compared to 2021. In numbers, this means there were 15,600 terminations in the first 10 weeks of gestation, the majority of them performed by the SNS (State health system). The majority of abortions were requested by women in the Lisbon/ Vale do Tejo areas. According to ERS information, there were 1,366 situations in which procedures were not realised because the legally established limit “had been passed”.
