50 people evacuated as flames surround Sesimbra Castle

50 people had to be evacuated as a precaution after simultaneous fires broke out in the hill leading up to Sesimbra Castle yesterday.

The incident – rapidly tackled by scores of firefighters backed by several appliances and one airplane – is widely believed to have been a planned arson attack.

Said commentators over social media “this was an attack”. But authorities haven’t said anything either way.

The fires caused limited damage to scrubland only – and there were no serious injuries although one firefighter had to be treated in hospital after being hit in the eye by a tree branch.

Residents in the area found themselves ‘surrounded by smoke’ shortly after 4.30. Within two hours the blazes had been brought under control.
