Restaurant review: New fine dining Italian for Albufeira
Luna Diamante opened its doors in late June and is situated in the São Rafael area near Coelha beach, close to Albufeira Marina. The restaurant is above a popular bar and shop and approached by stairs. The newly refurbished interior is stylish and modern with open kitchen, traditional pizza oven and comfortable seating and would certainly not be out of place in the “Golden Triangle”.
We were greeted by a young team who were well presented and extremely attentive, answering all our questions on both food and drink. There was no sommelier but a good selection of Portuguese and Italian wines ranging from €13 for house wine to a limited-edition Carlos Lucas Familia red from the Dão region at €115,95.
The freshly prepared food was nicely seasoned and beautifully presented from a well-considered menu created by chef Mario Sousa, including vegetarian options. Our favourite starter was a tartar steak with mustard, salt flower and fresh truffle with sweet potato and both mains – apple quinoto with maialino belly of pork and wild mushroom risotto – were gorgeous. Chefs amuse-bouche and palate cleanser were also enjoyed.
There is a good selection of handmade Italian pasta and the pizzas are all freshly cooked in the oven and available for take-away. We over-indulged with dessert, tasting six of the wonderful homemade options and of special note was the cheese ice cream, not forgetting the excellent traditional Italian cheeseboard.
Luna Diamante is open for light lunches from 2pm and full dinner service from 5:15pm, seven days a week, at mid-range prices. There is also a separate cocktail bar planned, outdoor seating and a comfortable sun terrace, welcome for walk-ins and is well worth a visit.
