Rescued turtle returns to the sea after 49 days

‘Quinas’ – the giant leatherback turtle who spent 49 days in recovery at the Zoomarine theme park in Guia after being found trapped in fishing nets at Meia Praia beach, Lagos – has finally been returned to the wild.

The impressive sea creature was released into the sea off the coast of Portimão on Wednesday (August 7).

The turtle was rescued on June 20 after being spotted struggling in the water and was brought to shore with the help of beachgoers, who helped lift it onto a vehicle to be taken to Zoomarine’s marine life rehabilitation centre.

For weeks it refused to eat, until finally it was brought some of its favourite snacks – live jellyfish.

The turtle, which weighs 300 kilos and measures 1.5 metres, recovered nicely during the time it was in Zoomarine’s care and the decision was finally made this week to return it to the sea where it belongs.

As Zoomarine says, hopes are that this magnificent creature will “never need the help of humans again”.
