Summer League – finals day
Thursday, July 4 was finals day of our Summer League season. It dawned cloudy and breezy, but our hosts this week were Pedras da Rainha, Cabanas, near the Spanish border, so as we travelled east towards the bowling club, the sun burned off the cloud, leaving a bright, beautiful day.
The green was in good condition and ready for the day’s competition. The first six games took place in the morning and the final four games in the afternoon.
Tavira Tigers were the highest scoring team this week, winning all 10 points from Albufeira Wildcats; the home team of Pedras Panthers won eight points from Alvor Kestrels who won two points; Balaia Dolphins took two points from Floresta Squirrels who won eight points; Valverde Vulcans won two points from Floresta Falcons who won eight points; whilst Valverde Vikings took three points from Alvor Egrets who won seven points.
The winning team was Valverde Vulcans on 65 points, just managing to squeak a one-point lead over Tavira Tigers on 64 points. Well done to both teams. Floresta Squirrels were closing on 58 points, whilst it is the middle of the table that changed due to this week’s results with Albufeira Wildcats dropping two places to eighth place on 32 points together with Balaia Dolphins at ninth place on 32 points, whilst Floresta Falcons, although still the strongest team holding up the table, closed the gap finishing on 29 points.
Congratulations to Valverde Vulcans for winning the trophy, which was presented by Maggie Dance, who was also our Umpire of the day. Many thanks to all the participants who have made the competition so enjoyable, to those teams who have struggled with finding players, and to Maggie Dance who has travelled to the games to Umpire every week.
This week’s game sees the end of our bowling season, so I would like to thank all the bowlers and clubs for their support during the year, and to wish everyone an excellent summer. I will say ‘bye’ for now and look forward to beginning my reports again later in the year when the new season begins in October.
