Sustainable gastronomy tourism discussed at Algarve university

The future of the Algarve’s sustainable gastronomic tourism and the strategies that should be implemented to develop the sector were debated last week by a panel of 22 representatives from the public and private sector.

The meeting was held on Monday, June 17 at the Penhas Campus of the University of Algarve and was designed to come up with strategies to make the Algarve an appealing and sustainable destination for food lovers.

Among the institutions that took part in the talks were the Algarve’s Fishing and Agriculture Board (DRAP), the University of the Algarve (UAlg), the Algarve Hotelier School, the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR Algarve), the Algarve Tourism Board (RTA), Loulé Council and the Algarve Municipalities Association (AMAL).

Also among the speakers were representatives of the restaurant, hotel and gastronomy sectors.

Together, they debated and agreed that the Algarve needs to attract holidaymakers who are concerned about sustainability and move away from the “tourism for the masses”.

Certifying companies, getting the local community involved, diversifying what the tourism sector has to offer, creating support networks to help small producers and preserving natural landscapes were also identified as objectives for the future.

The event was part of the European Medfest programme which aims to create a more sustainable future for Mediterranean countries.
