Sir Cliff Richard’s Adega do Cantor wins Algarve’s Best Wine title

Vida Nova Reserva IGP Algarve Tinto 2015 – a red wine produced by Adega do Cantor, the Algarve winery co-owned by Sir Cliff Richard – has received the title of ‘Best Wine of the Algarve’ at the 12th Algarve Wines Competition held in Lagos on Sunday, June 9.

A total of 111 wines made in the Algarve were tasted, with the jury attributing 12 gold medals and 20 silver medals to the best wines. This year, no bronze medals were awarded.

The other big winner, with three gold medals and two silver medals was Quinta dos Vales. They were awarded gold for Marquês dos Vales Syrah & Viognier IGP Algarve Tinto 2017, Marquês dos Vales Grace Verdelho IGP Algarve Branco 2018 and Marquês dos Vales Grande Escolha IGP Algarve Tinto 2015; and silver medals for Marquês dos Vales Grace Touriga Nacional IGP Algarve Tinto 2016 and Marquês dos Vales Duo IGP Algarve Branco 2018.

Quinta da Tôr also got three gold medals, for Quinta da Tôr Aragonês IGP Algarve Tinto 2016, Quinta da Tôr Reserva IGP Algarve Tinto 2015 and Quinta da Tôr Reserva Touriga Nacional IGP Algarve Tinto 2016.

Sara Silva, president of the Algarve wine commission (CVA), hailed the event’s success.

“We reached a record number of wines and new producers took part. I would like to thank them all,” she told Barlavento newspaper.

The Adega do Cantor winery is located in Guia and was built to produce wine from the three surrounding estates: Quinta do Moinho, Quinta do Miradouro and Vale do Sobreiro.

Sir Cliff Richard is “very much involved in the production of the wine” and he is often seen “getting his hands dirty in the vineyard or indeed his feet dirty in the winery”, according to the Adega do Cantor website.

But the winery is just one of many that have helped the Algarve establish a name for itself as a wine region in recent years.

This improvement has been acknowledged by the vice-president of Portugal’s Sommeliers Association (AEP), Artur Caldas.

“Many techniques have been developed both in terms of the production of vines and the production of wines in the cellars. There has been a great evolution which has led to good products,” he told the paper.

He also praised the high number of entries this year, which he believes “enriches the contest”.

Although it isn’t mandatory, the tastings happen in the morning as “the palate is free of invasive flavours”. Furthermore it “makes the logistics of the event much easier,” he explained.

Each table of the jury comprises of five people – two must be sommeliers or members of AEP. The three others can be wine connoisseurs, journalists or hoteliers.

Artur Caldas also revealed that the number of people wanting to become sommeliers is growing, especially women, and said that “wine is in fashion”; however, he said, producers must learn to adapt to factors such as climate change.

The awarded wines will be receiving their prizes on Friday, July 22 at Lagos’ cultural centre.
