Algarve Stadium will host Benfica-Sporting for Super Cup
Portuguese football giants Benfica and Sporting will face off at the Algarve Stadium on Sunday, August 4 to determine who will be the winner of the 2019 Portuguese Super Cup.
The last time that the Super Cup was held in the Algarve was in 2015 when the teams who qualified for the competition were also the two Lisbon rivals. Sporting, who had just ‘stolen’ coach Jorge Jesus from Benfica a few months earlier, won 1-0.
It is still too early to forecast who will be the favourite to win this year as the season has just ended and both sides could still lose many key players, with stars like Benfica’s wonderkid João Félix and Sporting’s record-setting goal scorer Bruno Fernandes being linked to some of Europe’s top clubs.
The Super Cup has been played since 1979 between the winners of the previous season’s league and cup competitions. Benfica will arrive as the Primeira Liga champions while Sporting just beat FC Porto a few days ago to lift the Taça de Portugal.
Faro mayor Rogério Bacalhau is delighted that the Algarve Stadium was chosen to host the Super Cup.
“The stadium is a wonderful infrastructure which is always ready to host big events and competitions,” he said, congratulating the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for choosing the Algarve.
“It will certainly be a big party,” he added.
The announcement was also celebrated by Loulé mayor Vítor Aleixo, who said that the Super Cup is a “prestigious national football competition” which this year will be played by “two of the biggest Portuguese clubs at a time when the Algarve will be packed with people”.
