Good value from a big name in Alvarinho
The yellow label Alvarinho Deu La Deu, produced by The Monção Wine Cooperative up in the Vinho Verde region, is one of Portugal’s best-selling Alvarinhos.
The popular price point of around €5 in shops and consistent quality make this one of the best value-for-money Portuguese white wines out there.
It was only this week, however, that I discovered they have a “Reserva”, costing around €12 (Intermarché) and representing equally good value for money.
This wine can stand up in terms of quality to some of the premium Alvarinhos costing well over €15. It is fresh and fragrant on the nose with notes of orange blossom, passion fruit and peach, smooth and well-rounded in the mouth with good acidity and a nice long finish.
Like all good Alvarinho, this is a white wine best drunk after at least a few years in the bottle. Intermarché is currently selling the 2016 and from what I could gather from a quick google search, the 2017 is yet to be released – kudos to the producer.
