Albufeira to host “biggest wine event south of Tejo River” in May
Over 100 winemakers from around Portugal are expected at the 11th Grande Mostra de Vinhos de Portugal, one of the country’s biggest wine shows which will be held between Friday, May 3 and Sunday, May 5 in Albufeira’s EMA pavilion.
The event will feature around 900 national wines which can all be tasted by visitors.
Organisers are expecting 10,000 visitors at the event which they say is “recognised as the biggest of its kind south of the Tejo River”.
“Thanks to this event, we have been placing the Algarve on the wine lovers map in Portugal and strengthening the quality of our wines as a way to bolster the local economy,” says Carlos Oliveira, head of the Confraria Bacchus de Albufeira.
Around 20 Algarve winemakers will also be showcasing their products at the show.
“The origin of wine in Portugal started in the Algarve, a wine growing area influenced by the sea breeze that comes into contact with the grapes,” said Oliveira.
“Algarve wines are establishing themselves for their quality and combine with the region’s sun, sea and gastronomy to create a different kind of holiday for wine lovers.”
Carlos Oliveira also said that new winemakers are popping up around the Algarve all the time and that many high-quality whites and rosés made in the region are already available on the market.
The event will also have a charitable side as €1 for every tasting glass and every Guia chicken purchased at the fair will go towards helping the victims of the devastating cyclone that hit Mozambique last month.
Apart from the wine tasting, visitors will also be able to enjoy a variety of workshops, showcooking events, musical performances and more.
The wine show opens from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, and 3pm to 9pm on Saturday and Sunday.
