Floating bridge links Alcoutim to Spain for Contraband Festival

Alcoutim and Sanlúcar de Guadiana will again be linked by a floating footbridge for another edition of the Contraband Festival between March 29 and 31.

The festival recalls the not-so-distant times when contraband was key to survival in these communities. Late-night smuggling was seen as an opportunity for a better life and future, and both communities would trade goods despite it being illegal.

For three days, historical re-enactments throughout the towns’ streets will touch on themes such as “rural life, desertification, ageing, the region’s traditions and other aspects linked to survival contraband”.

There will also be street markets and handicraft demonstrations, but the highlight is the floating bridge that links the two towns over the Guadiana River.

The event is part of the 365 Algarve cultural programme. Admission is free.
