New pop-up South African restaurant in Almancil

Pop-up restaurants are taking the food industry by storm. Last Sunday, the Resident visited the newest South African pop-up restaurant in Almancil.

While it may seem unlikely that you would be able to eat traditional South African food inside a Greek restaurant, the truth is that it is exactly what you can do inside O Grego restaurant in Almancil on Sundays.

On the last day of the week, it opens with a different concept: every food or beverage served is inspired by, or is originally from, South Africa. The idea was proposed by a South African collaborator of the restaurant.

Last Sunday, we visited the restaurant to check out the food. For €20, clients can enjoy a set lunch menu which includes a very generous starter, a main dish, an even more generous dessert and a coffee with pastry. Drinks, however, are not included.

Our meal began with starter portions of marinated pork rashers, basted mushroom skewers and boerewors, a traditional South African sausage. These were all new flavours for us.

Keen on discovering more, we decided to share and try one of each main dish: chicken potjie stew served with rice, bobotie with yellow rice and chicken kebab with chips. The bobotie was definitely the winner. This typically South African dish is made of smoothly spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping and served with yellow rice, very rich in flavours.

Our desserts were a malva pudding served with custard or melktert, a South African milk tart, both served in such big portions that they seemed impossible for us to finish.

The food menu was paired with ‘Sacana Dry’, a cider beer, and a delicious Delheim Pinotage Rosé 2018 wine.

Overall, the pop-up restaurant is good value for money and an opportunity to enjoy South African flavours.

O Grego by Philippos is located on 1a Dezembro 2 street on Almancil’s main avenue. Call Theunis to make a reservation (911 969 241).
