New Portuguese casualty in Venezuela violence

With the number of requests for Portuguese nationality lodged at consulate offices in Venezuela rising by 82% this year, another Portuguese businessman has been assassinated.

The 58-year-old was shot twice in the chest by unknown assailants as he went to open his fruit shop on Margarita island on Saturday.

The situation in Venezuela has been deteriorating since 2015, with more than 48% of the population now living in poverty.

Portuguese authorities have been trying to fly aid into the country, and have offered those wishing to flee permanently jobs and shelter ‘back home’ (click here).

At last count, more than 3000 emigrés had returned to Portugal with their families.
