Full house for Portugal’s first Sushi Battle

Fill the popular Medusis Club in Almancil with the greatest sushi chefs in the Algarve and what do you get? Portugal’s first ever Sushi Battle – a spectacular, one-of-a-kind cook-off where the audience picks the winner.

Arriving under a starlit November evening, each guest was welcomed with a glass of Sake Sangria, a unique blend of Japanese and Portuguese flavours that set the tone for an event where the freshest local produce inspired the wild creativity of 10 international sushi masters.

After the opening ceremony complete with Geisha girls and Japanese lanterns, each chef had only one hour to serve their sushi creations to a full house of eager diners and an expert jury panel made up of Ana Afonso from the acclaimed Dominó Tasca in Porto, sushi master Miguel Bértolo and Gonçalo Coelho from event sponsor Keta Foods.

In an epic display of skill, passion and pride, they battled it out in an action-packed showcase that treated guests to an interactive culinary experience where they had the opportunity to vote for their favourite chef.

With the electric atmosphere spilling onto a sophisticated dining area, the chefs put their heart and soul into each creation, with everyone who attended in agreement that no-one was going home a loser – especially the guests!

But in the end, there could be only one winner and, with the votes counted, the closing ceremony crowned Tiago Torres (Sushi Pearl, Faro) the first Sushi Battle winner, Arnaldo Gonçalves (Club Nau, Ferragudo) came second and Yoshio Imoto from Daiya Cocktail & Sushi (Tavira) third.

With this inaugural event a resounding success, sushi chefs and lovers from across the country and beyond are already preparing for the next Sushi Battle.
