All animals, from ferrets to iguanas, welcome at new Algarve pet hotel
A new hotel for animals called Pets Inn has opened in Loulé, welcoming cats, dogs, iguanas, ferrets and “many other species”.
The project is the brainchild of young businessman Fábio Ferreira who was able to bring his idea to life after participating in the ‘Empreende Já’ programme designed to teach youngsters “everything they need to create a company and run a business”.
He was one of 370 people selected for the programme, and his project was one of just 101 in Portugal (six in the Algarve) that were supported.
As Ferreira points out, although hotels for pet animals like dogs and cats “are common in the Algarve”, there aren’t many alternatives for owners of birds, fish and reptiles.
“We provide a different service for the temporary lodging of many animal species – something that was desperately needed in the region,” he says.
His business partner is 40-year-old João Paulino, the owner of the Iron Dog Algarve dog training school in Quarteira.
“While João has a lot of experience with dogs, I have always had different kinds of animals like iguanas, ferrets and snakes, so we decided to join our knowledge and experience in handling these animals. We are an inclusive hotel for many species and we want to help people who need to go away and don’t have anyone to look after their animals,” Ferreira adds.
The hotel, which will be able to welcome around 35 animals, is not completed yet. So far it offers accommodation for eight dogs, four cats and a few spaces for reptiles and rodents.
“We will certainly be completely operational by Christmas and New Year, when many people need to travel,” the 27-year-old entrepreneur says.
Loulé was chosen as the location as it is “more central and accessible, located conveniently near the airport”.
The hotel’s individual pens are eight square metres in size and include indoor and outdoor areas and feature ‘ambient music’. There is also a recreational area where dogs can be free for most part of the day.
In the coming months, Pets Inn will also feature a training area and an obstacle course where animals can be trained.
The hotel is open every day with 24/7 surveillance.
