Onshore quake rattles Monchique
Days after an offshore quake caused buildings to shudder and groan in the centre and north of the country, an onshore tremor measuring 2.9 on the Richter Scale has startled Monchique and been felt kms away, as far south as the beachside town of Carvoeiro.
Said a resident there: “I heard the glasses clinking in the kitchen…”
The quake came around 8.15 this morning, and so far there have been no reports of any damage or injuries.
Said a statement from IPMA (institute for sea and atmosphere), the quake’s epicentre has been registered as 10 kms north east of Monchique, coming from a depth of 5 kms.
Consultation of IPMA’s seismic map shows there have been a number of smaller quakes in the area in the past 30 days, none as large as this one however.
