Controversial talk on dictator Salazar
“Was Salazar a Fascist?” is the title of a controversial topic being presented by historian Peter Kingdon Booker this month.
The first presentation will be on Friday, October 26 in the Tavira Municipal Library at 11am, followed by another on Tuesday, October 30 in the Lagoa Municipal Library at 6pm.
In his new lecture on Salazar, Peter shows how Portugal succumbed to nearly half a century of dictatorship, and discusses the support enjoyed by this civilian dictator. Peter will show whether Salazar was a fascist, and whether this label is important in the context of Portugal’s history.
When Peter first gave a lecture about António de Oliveira Salazar, an aggressive comment after the talk suggested that Salazar was evil because he was a fascist. Since that time 10 years ago, Peter has reflected on this comment and in this new lecture addresses this important question – what exactly is or was a fascist?
In order to understand Salazar’s political orientation, we need to find out how he came to power and how he held on to it for 36 years.
Algarve History Association talks are free, but monetary contributions are welcome to help with the ongoing expenses of running the association.
