Fisherman dies off Faro after three-hour wait for rescue
A fisherman has died off the coast of Faro, waiting almost three hours for help to arrive.
Despite raising the alarm at 2pm yesterday, the first rescue craft didn’t locate his vessel until 4.55pm.
The dead man was discovered floating in the water, his companion and fellow fisherman – reportedly a ‘foreigner’ – was found on the boat, still alive.
Initial reports suggest that despite the scrambling of a Naval launch, ISN lifeboat crew, maritime police boat and helicopter, it was a yacht sailing under a French flag that first reached the stranded boat.
The emergency call, received directly from the boat by Quarpesca, the Quarteira association of fishermen, described a situation where “the boat had lost propulsion”, says Jornal de Notícias.
It is still unclear why one of the fishermen ended up in the water.
