Tax payment by direct debit
In this new monthly column, afpop, Portugal’s largest foreign residents’ association, aims to answer some of the most frequently-asked questions by members.
Question: I’ve been told I can pay taxes by direct debit now. Is that correct and, if so, how do I set it up?
afpop answers: Yes, tax payment by direct debit (DD) is now available through the Portal das Finanças via a new function in the website which allows you to pay certain taxes via direct debit, making it easier, quicker and also without missing renewal dates. The facility is now operational for IRS, IRC, IMI and IUC taxes. It will also allow you to make payments by instalments.
You just need to log on to the Finanças website – www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt – and then type Débito Direto (please note the spelling) in the search box and click on ‘Aceder’. Then click on the box that says either ‘Pedido de Adesão’ or ‘Novo Pedido de Adesão’.
Then you can choose:
■ Which kind of payment (recurring or singular)
■ What you want to pay (for example: IRS or IUC)
■ The maximum amount of the payment you authorise and the date on which the payment should be made
An authorisation document is generated once the DD has been set up which can then be printed (it is advisable to download the document and save it to your computer and print from there). At any time, you can make modifications or check the authorisation file. Please note that the document you print is only proof that you have requested direct debit and is not proof of payment of the tax. You will receive confirmation from Finanças that the DD has been set up and you will also receive confirmation by email and a Finanças document through the post once the payment has been made.
In future, it is expected that people will be able to set up DD at the Finanças offices, but this is not operational at the moment.
An afpop Fact Sheet explaining the steps to be taken to set up the DD is available to members from the afpop office.
IUC documents: Please note that it is not a requirement to carry these documents in your vehicle. In the past, members may have printed the form from Finanças and attached the proof of payment and kept these in their vehicle, but this is no longer required.
