Bridegroom detained for rape on way to registry office
A 21-year-old Portuguese bridegroom was arrested by PJ police as he made his way to the registry office to get married. At issue was a complaint alleging rape, made by a 16-year-old girl two years ago.
Since that time, the young man has been “living in England”, say reports.
He returned to get married, and was “surprised by inspectors of the PJ as he set out for the Civil Registry” in Viana do Castelo.
Also detained was the young man’s father, aged 40.
Both men are suspected of having raped the 16 year old after a party.
But the PJ’s efforts did not possibly get the desired results: “on the option of the Public Ministry proseutor, (the men) were not taken before a judge of criminal instruction”, reports tabloid Correio da Manhã.
They were instead “questioned by the magistrate and ended up being released, subject to the most lenient bail term” which essentially entails remaining in their area of residence.
It is not explained whether the wedding went ahead after the trip to Viana do Castelo courthouse.
