In this new monthly column, afpop, Portugal’s largest foreign residents’ association, aims to answer some of the most frequently-asked questions by members.
Q: My electricity readings still appear to be estimated, despite being assured that they would be automatically read each month. How can I make sure that the bill is correct?
afpop answers: Submitting your electricity readings online is actually quite simple, even if you don’t speak Portuguese. First of all, you should read your last invoice and check the recommended date for you to submit your readings. It will usually be between two dates, for example the 18th and 20th of the month.
For those people who use EDP as their provider, when you log onto the EDP website (www.edp.pt) you click on the link ‘Apoio ao cliente’. If this is your first time on the site, you will need to create a password and then you can enter.
On the left side of the page, you will see a menu which starts with ‘Pagamentos e faturas’, below which is ‘Leituras’ (readings). Select this tab and you will see a list of the readings for your previous electricity bills and, above that, a red flash that says ‘Enviar leituras’ (next to that flash will be the dates that you can submit the readings).
Click on the flash and you will be given a box entitled ‘Enviar leitura de eletricidade’ and three spaces for ‘Vazio’, ‘Ponta’ and ‘Cheias’. Enter the relevant numbers in these three boxes and click the red flash for ‘Confirmar’ (if you are in doubt which number goes where, simply check the figures that you have with your previous readings and you will be able to tell which is which).
It is also possible to submit your electricity readings via the telephone using the EDP number 800 125 353, but you will need to have a reasonable understanding of Portuguese to be able to submit readings in that way. More information on that option can be obtained from the afpop office.
It is also possible to submit readings online for GALP customers, by visiting the website www.casa.galp.pt and clicking on the ‘enviar leitura’ logo on the top right-hand side of the page. A dialogue box will open at the bottom of the screen with easy-to-follow instructions. You will need your 10-digit reference number from your GALP factura, but the details are included in the GALP website.
