Countdown begins for Black Madonna celebration

The countdown has begun for ‘Dias das Virgens Negras’, a series of events that will take place at the Guadalupe chapel near Raposeira, Vila do Bispo, in June and which will invite the local community to learn how to draw, sing and dance using centuries-old traditions.

The first event will be a drawing workshop led by artist Mara Taquelim on Saturday, June 2 between 4pm and 6.40pm. The workshop will focus on the tradition and worship of the Black Madonna.

A week later (June 9), the initiative continues with a singing workshop that will introduce participants to the medieval pilgrim songs of the ‘Llibre Vermell de Montserrat’ manuscript, one of the “most emblematic musical manuscripts of the 14th century”. The workshop will be held again on Friday, June 15, led by Carmen Juncadella.

The last workshop will focus on the dances of the ‘Llibre Vermell’. As there is no record of these dances, the workshop will be something of a loose take on how the artists who will be leading the event believed they were likely danced. The event will be held on Saturday, June 16, between 10.30am and 1pm, and will be led by Catarina Costa e Silva.

‘Dias das Virgens Negras’ will come to a close later that day at 7pm with the show ‘Our Lady of Montserrat’, which will allow participants of the musical workshops to join professional musicians and singers and perform alongside them.

All the workshops are free and open to all, and while participants don’t need to read music, they should have “an ear for music”.
