Olhão’s riverfront overhaul to begin in October

Redevelopment work to “completely change the face of Olhão” by turning the town’s riverfront into an “area of excellence” for residents and tourists will begin in October, the town council has announced.

The Court of Auditors has given the project the green light but works will only move forward after the summer, even though they could technically start as soon as April.

“As the works would be ongoing during summer if they started now, the municipality negotiated with all those involved so that they only begin in October, after the high season. This way, businesses and the many thousands of tourists who visit us until the end of September won’t be affected,” the council said in a statement.

At the time it was announced, the project was described as one that would “change the face of Olhão and make locals proud”.

“Once it is completed, Olhão will boast a unique riverfront in the Algarve, and maybe in Portugal. It will be modern but preserve tradition, values and the soul of Olhão,” local mayor António Pina said last March.

The mayor believes the riverfront area will become a much better place to “work or enjoy a leisurely walk” and will bring the town in harmony with the natural landscape of the Ria Formosa.
