FOLLOWING THE example set in previous years, an underwater cleaning campaign was recently carried out to tidy up Quarteira beach.
A total of around 200 kilos of rubbish were collected from the seabed, including fishing related items, rope, tin cans, glass, plastic and iron.
In total, 30 volunteer divers took part in the initiative from groups including Ipimar, Associação Atlântico Selvagem, Escola de Mergulho Hidroespaço, Refúgio dos Mergulhadores and Associação Geonauta, the last two of which are based in Quarteira.
The clean-up has contributed to the increase in hygiene levels at the beach, particularly with regard to the water. But the campaign has also aimed to raise awareness among visitors to the beach of the importance to protect the beaches and be more environmentally responsible.
This initiative was the culmination of various awareness activities that Loulé Câmara, in conjunction with other entities, has been promoting during the bathing season at Loulé beaches that bear the blue flag.
