20 deaths on Portuguese roads during first week of August

At least 20 people have died on the roads of Portugal since the start of August. This number is expected to rise as data comes through on numbers that have died on the way, or once admitted to hospital. Aside from deaths there have been serious accidents, one of which involved a young motorcyclist (aged 17) being hit by a GNR police jeep as it overtook on the other side of the road. Reports this morning say the youngster suffered serious injuries and risks having one of his legs amputated.
