Since March 2011 when the law regarding sex changes was passed, 197 people have officially re-registered themselves at the nation’s “conservatórios” (registry office), while only 13 “sexual reattribution” surgeries have taken place (eight involving women to men, and five in which men became women).
According to data released by the Justice Ministry, 158 people nationally are waiting for sex-change operations.
