Eighteen PSP agents – including a police chief – attached to one of Lisbon’s outlying divisions are cited in a public ministry investigation into the paying out of ‘funeral back-handers’. According to reports, the alleged scam involved funeral agencies paying police as much as €500 a time for steering clients in their direction. For now, there have been no formal arrests, but the public ministry confirms it has instituted an inquiry.
According to national tabloid Correio da Manhã, the stations involved are those of Almada and Laranjeiro.
Along with a list including the names of the 18 police personnel said to be involved are three local funeral agencies.
