16 rescued after boat overturns inside Algarve cave

All passengers were rescued and unharmed

Sixteen people were rescued on Tuesday afternoon after a tourist boat overturned inside a sea cave in Carvoeiro, Lagoa.

Reports Correio da Manhã tabloid, the incident happened in a cave between the Alfanzina lighthouse and Benagil. Aboard were 14 passengers (eight French and six Spanish), including five children aged between two and six who were unharmed, and two crew members.

The rescue mission was led by the Ferragudo lifeboat station (Estação Salva-Vidas) with the help of another tourist boat.

“The boat overturned and the people stayed inside the cave. The response was very quick and allowed for the rescue of everyone without injuries,” Portimão port commander, Eduardo Pousadas Godinho, told CM.
