154 tonnes of food collected for the hungry in Algarve

Nearly 3,000 volunteers from the Algarve Food Bank collected around 154 tonnes of supplies in the region during a nationwide campaign held last weekend.

The food supplies, which were collected in 140 supermarkets, will be distributed to 73 social solidarity institutions supporting a total of 15,074 needy people in the Algarve.

Ida Martins from the Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome do Algarve said the campaign exceeded all expectations and this had been the best May campaign ever.

The campaign provides an important contribution for people in need, thanks to a large movement of solidarity by the Portuguese society and the dedication of thousands of volunteers.

At the recently inaugurated Portimão Food Bank warehouse, 100 volunteers collected 55 tonnes of food supplies.

For years, the only Algarve Food Bank warehouse was located in Faro, but now it is logistically easier to collect, store and distribute food supplies to meet the needs of poor people in this part of the Algarve.

The warehouse is located in the Coca Maravilhas area.

Throughout Portugal, a total of 2,644 tonnes of food were collected by around 37,000 volunteers in more than 1,655 retail outlets. The amount collected represents 13.7% more than in the May campaign last year. The food supplies will be distributed to a total of 2,116 institutions helping 337,000 hunger-stricken people across Portugal.
