Event || October 12 marks the return of Mamamaratona – the hugely popular walk/race against breast cancer – to the Portimão riverside.
Besides trying to raise awareness of cancer, organiser the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) also hopes to raise money for the construction of a home for patients being treated at Faro’s radiotherapy unit.
As usual, the walk/race starts at 10am with participants asked to gather along the riverside area, near the old fish auction house (Antiga Lota).
The course is 8km-long with the start/finish line at the Lota.
For the sportier participants, there are also two other competitions – the ‘Mini-Mamamaratona’ (10km) and the ‘Meia-Mamamaratona’ (21km) for federated athletes.
Pre-registration for the 14th Mamamaratona costs €6 for adults and €3 for children up to 12, including a t-shirt, hat and promotional items. Registering on the day of the event costs an extra euro.
Last year, a total of €25,000 was raised for cancer care and around 6,000 people took part in the 13th Mamamaratona.
