Speaking today at a congress in Lisbon, finance minister Fernando Medina has extolled the importance of a country, facing “a demographic winter”, being able to attract immigrants, which now represent 13% of the country’s workforce. “Since 2017, we have seen positive migratory balances totalling 323,000 people. Today, and I emphasise the importance of this figure, 600,000 foreign workers are part of our workforce,” he told the congress of the Association of Economists, stressing “it is essential to value (Portugal’s) ability to attract and welcome immigrants”.
